nurture

In the hard decisions of living, to choose that which nurtures people is another guiding standard. Nurturing is feeding, but it is more than feeding. In the musical words of invitation that open Isaiah 55, the writer begins by offering food and drink.

'Ho, every one who thirsts,

come to the waters;

and he who has no money,

come, buy and eat!'

The call is to come to a bountifully stocked grocery store - but then the twist! The store has no cash register. The food is free. Now Isaiah poses his real question: 'Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?' 'Eat what is good,' he says, ;that your soul will live' (Isaiah 55:2-3). Then follows a glorious vision of what can be - living by covenant and love, with peace, and culminating in the redemption of the natural order. Nurturing includes all actions which bring others to this full life and growth in the kingdom of God.”
